A coalition of Liberian civil society groups is urging the government to stop signing or ratifying new long-term mining contracts until the country rewrites its 2000 mining law. The groups say the current framework has contributed to weak oversight, lost revenue and pollution, and they want President Joseph Nyuma Boakai and lawmakers to impose a moratorium on new Mineral Development Agreements while the law is updated.
