Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva won a fourth term as president of Brazil after defeating right-wing Senator Flavio Bolsonaro in a closely contested runoff, according to results from the Superior Electoral Court. Lula overcame a 1.87-point first-round deficit and won with 51.79% of the valid votes, while Bolsonaro received 48.21%. The result keeps the left in power in Latin America’s largest economy and could affect the region’s political balance, integration and cooperation.
