An essay argues that Ukraine’s sovereignty is the freedom of small nations to govern themselves, preserve their identity and decide their future, and says Russia’s war is severely testing that principle. It warns that the world must not become accustomed to the war or let other crises distract attention from Ukraine, citing a worsening human toll: the United Nations Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine verified at least 328 civilians killed and 2,105 injured in September 2026, and Ukrainian officials said Russian attacks in Kyiv and near Kharkiv on 21 October killed five people and injured at least 23.
