EU and Canada explore deeper partnership, but proposed ‘associate member’ language is dropped from joint declaration

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said the EU and Canada are still exploring a closer partnership that could go beyond a standard trade relationship, including cooperation on AI, climate, energy and security. But the phrase “associate member” was omitted from the joint declaration after reported opposition from several EU countries, and officials instead used the wording “ever closer association.”
